In the latest books, Volumes VII and VIII, Dr. Dawes continues to illuminate with his gentle but probing prose, as he seeks out facts to record the truth. The resulting articles follow individuals—sometimes with their partners, sometimes with their families—and their complicated and colourful careers in the conjuring arts. We are also treated to a rare, self-reflecting point of view in Dr. Dawes’s final two articles, as he concludes the Rich Cabinet series by commenting on what magic history and collecting meant to him for seven decades.
